Marshal Go-Karting Social Event

Date: Saturday, July 20, 2024

With great excitement and anticipation, Saturday, July 20, 2024, finally arrives. Today, ORMU marshals will be on the other side of the race – today, they will be the ones racing.

Arrival at Zwartkops Go-Kart Track

The excitement is palpable as we arrive at the Zwartkops go-kart track. A few of the guys are cautiously optimistic about the competition. Willie shows up with his own helmet, ready for action.

Driver’s Briefing and Warm-Up

We start with a driver’s briefing covering all the dos and don’ts. Then, there’s a 5-minute warm-up followed by a 10-minute race. Everyone finishes safely, though Uncle PeteW struggles to get out of his kart, the adrenaline was intense. Theuns is grinning from ear to ear, reminiscing about the past. Group A is done, and now it’s time for Group B to give their best. The competition heats up, with Hendrik giving Willie and the winner, Casey, a run for their money. Willie is buzzing with adrenaline – what a thrill!

The Main Race

Now for the main event: a 15-minute race with all participants. The fastest time determines that the participant starts at the back for the main race in an “inverted grid.” Zelda is thrilled to start in pole position. Chaos erupts as engines roar to life, and the race begins with hard driving and late braking to get the most out of the karts and the track.

Results

  • Winner: Casey
  • 2nd Place: Willie van Niekerk
  • 3rd Place: Theuns Beer

Post-Race Celebration

After the medal ceremony and podium procedure, we gather around a fire, sharing long stories about all the mistakes and “what-ifs.” We chat, laugh, and forge strong bonds unique to ORMU members. The conversation continues late into the afternoon, filled with jokes and camaraderie.

Wrapping Up

As we pack up and head home, we carry beautiful memories of an unforgettable experience. From young to old, everyone had a fantastic time, and smiles were everywhere. There is a unanimous agreement that we must have another day like this. Thanks to all the members and families who made the day a success.

Special thanks to Chris Mans for arranging this wonderful social event.
